Lucky Finds

Since we've been here we've been hitting yard sales and estate sales, thrift stores and junk stores….looking for the special something that will fit our needs. Here are some of our finds.

We found license plates! This one is from the year our home was built and we found two more, from our birth years….not going to post those…gal has'ta have some secrets. Anyway, I plan to build something with these, so stay tuned!

At a yard sale I found an antique violin case, all wood. Needs a bit of TLC and to be relined. Anyone one have an idea where I can get self adhesive red velvet/felt by the yard? Also have some plans with this. Its all about repurposing!

I love this pot, enjoyed many a cups of ice tea…but something is wrong with it. From the dark spots in the glaze it sweats sticky stuff….ick…I'm afraid of lead poisoning….something I learned about in ceramics class…. If the glaze is cracked or the surface is not totally covered, lead can leach out of the ceramic into your food or liqiuds….Maybe I'll use it as a vase for dried flowers??

A lucky find for 2 dollars at a garage sale. It is now in my craft room, used to store odds and ends.

This was something brand new - The cup in the middle is from my set of "good" dishes. Almost all of which made the move without a scratch…almost. I lost 3 soup/cereal bowls. I have been looking for replacements, but so far I haven't been lucky…till I saw these on sale at Ross. They are BIG soup bowls with lids that i can also put in the ovens for individual casseroles, deserts, baked over what nots….unlimited possibilities and the red matches the red in my dishes perfectly! Now I just need to finish refinishing the dining table….

Love the patina on this brass vase we found at our favorite thrift store….I just have to resist the inner urge to polish it!

I love the giant Cognac glass. It is mouth blown and very thin walled. So many things I could use it for…plan to have it out on our new porch.
I
know, I said I have enough green glass, but it would have been perfect for lilacs….my bush out front was starting to bloom and I could just see them in there….

I didn't know that it would freeze again and we'd lose all our beautiful lilacs….there's always next year...

Now this was a great find, a 4 GALLON mason jar with lid - it is amazing. We are guessing that in some point in time it was used for pickles, right now it is our change collection jar - will just take us 3409193845904832759023 years to fill it - but boy when it's full, we can get something really special!!

There is more to share, but it will have to wait for another post. So for now Good night and

A Stitch in Time

Dating myself here, but I'm a child of the 70's...and a sewing box was something we had to have for Home Ec class. All my classmates had these tiny sewing boxes and I had a HUGE green monster. Knew that sewing would be in my future and would need the storage.

Well it made it to Germany, but didn't make it to Hawaii with me. I miss it and couldn't find anything like it on the modern market.

I checked ebay and they were there, but the sellers wanted 40 bucks plus shipping...just wasn't willing to pay that much for it.

I continued to dream that I might someday find one.

On a trip to the butcher in Meridian we saw there was a Youth Ranch thrift store that we hadn't visited yet and decide to stop in.

Image my joy when I found this in their craft department!

Yes, you read right, a thrift store with a CRAFT department!! I was really amazed by what they had, stamps, beads, patterns...lots of cool stuff.

Anyway, I checked it over and it was in good condition and wait for it.....

They were asking $3.95.

Mine, Mine, Mine!

Now I just need my sewing machine and notions over there and I'll be all set!

This and That

We found a few more items that go well with our style...

Found this octopus over at onekingslane. com. Since we both love to interact with octopi - it has a lot of meaning to us.

This phone also came from onekingslane. It is a replica with buttons instead of a dial, but it's nice and heavy, just like real old phones used to be. Can't wait to hook it up!

Now that we have the dining set in the wood room, we've crossed the murphy bed off our wish list - but we did want to have a guest bed. Found this beautiful, all wood, day bed at the World Market store. It will be in my craft room so I have a place to snuggle up and let those creative juices flow. Don't worry - over time we will be finishing the basement.

Every time we leave it's getting harder and harder to do so and my new knick knack says it best.

My Poor Lamp

I was so happy with the driftwood lamp I made last Summer. It looked so unique and special and was so us.

When we returned in December I was sad to see that the driftwood couldn't take the tension of being clamped around the inner post of the lamp and it cracked.

I first tried screwing it back together, but I couldn't make the screw go where I wanted it to go and it didn't look good.

Next try was to glue and clamp it together. Did that and when I took it apart the wood just pulled apart again.

What to do?

Then I thought, we have so many shells, I could wrap silver wire around the wood to hold it together and glue a shell over the twisted wire.....that might do the trick.

On the day that we were out and about I found a box of small porcelain shell ornaments and hubby and I both agreed that one of them would work out perfectly. And it did!

What'cha think?

This Weeks Thrift Store Find

Since finding the cute amber juice glasses I've been a bit more open to glass colors, other than my beloved green glass.

So it was no surprise when I saw this I found something that I could call mine.

Love the fluted edge and the pattern it makes when the light shines thru. There is no stamp or mark on the bottom, so I don't know much about it.

Anyone have an idea? or a suggestion where I could look?

What did you find this week?

This Weeks Find

I went into the store with the thought; Hey, I'll just take pictures of what I see...I will still have the thrill of the find, but won't have to worry about where to put it or reselling it.

Looks like someone got rid of their "funny sayings" statues

Gave me a giggle or two.

Repeated my mantra - I 'm not going to buy anything.

Saw a bowl like this (but totally tarnished)
Turned it over and it had a stamp on the bottom" WM Rogers, 427". They wanted $29.90 for it. Did a quick google search and found a few just like it and it was priced about right. But it wasn't anything that I might find a use for and, to me, it wasn't unique enough to make me feel I should splurge and buy it....like I did with the decanter.

So proud, "I 'm not going to buy anything."

Then I saw this one

Nice shape, love the little feet...I could see this sitting on the sink in the bathroom with some doo dads.....It was in bad shape, but I thought if I can't get it clean I could maybe spray paint it....

uh oh, I'm thinking about what I could do with it...

You guessed it, I bought something.

When I got it home I wrapped it in paper towels soaked with Tarn-ex and let it sit for a bit. Then I polished it with my dremel stuff. Turned out pretty nice

I am really amazed how the inside turned out. The surface was  all roughed up and I though it was ruined. Guess I thought wrong.

I looked up the company, San Giovanni, and it seems they mainly made real silver items, because I didn't find anything silver plated. So maybe this is a rare, unique find?

Judging by the shape and style it could be from the late 30's or 40's. At $4.99 it was a good deal.

Love the light reflections and am sure it will add a touch of somethin-somethin to our bathroom.

So this is my find, what's yours?

Click Away Monday Collection #2

I did something wrong last week and people were not able to share a pic on this page, so lets give this another try.
